A young widow is told to bear her dead husband's elder brother an heir — he is the empire's sternest minister.

Xia Fu lost her husband in a war and expected to live out her days a quiet widow. Instead, her mother-in-law arranges a 'dual succession' marriage with the family's young head, Chancellor Cheng Mingyu — the empire's most upright, untouchable official. He tells her: once you bear a child, we part. She agrees. He does not.
