Sold as a book-boy at fifteen, a prince's secret visit to Suzhou becomes the chessboard a poor scholar will climb for fifty years.

In the nineteenth year of Tiande, fifteen-year-old Qi Zheng is sold into a merchant house as a servant just as the Prince of Wei arrives in Suzhou in disguise; following his mother's cryptic instructions he calls on three great sages — and receives three brilliant rejects instead, igniting a completed climb from cold-clan nobody to chancellor who grips the court.
