📚 Glossary — the terms that trip newcomers up
The single biggest reason foreigners bounce off Chinese web novels is unexplained terminology. Here's the decoder.
Cultivation & power
Cultivation 修炼
Training the body and soul to gain longevity and power, step by step. The engine of most Chinese fantasy.
Qi 气
The life-energy cultivated by characters. Think "mana" or "chi."
Golden Core 金丹
A condensed energy core formed at a mid stage of cultivation — a major power spike.
Nascent Soul 元婴
A later stage where the cultivator grows a miniature "soul body." Very strong.
Dao 道
The "Way" — a character's personal truth/path. Mastering it is the endgame.
Dantian 丹田
The energy center in the lower abdomen where Qi is stored.
Tribulation 渡劫
Heaven-sent lightning a cultivator must survive to break through. Fail and you die.
Sect 门派
A cultivation school/clan with its own techniques and hierarchy.
Spirit Stones 灵石
Crystal currency that stores Qi — the in-world money of cultivators.
Romance & danmei
Face / Face-slapping 面子 / 打脸
"Face" is social standing. "Slapping face" = publicly humiliating an arrogant foe who looked down on you. The genre's signature beat.
Young Master 少爷
The spoiled heir who picks on the hero — and gets face-slapped. A recurring comic villain.
Danmei 耽美
Chinese Boys' Love. The gong (top) / shou (bottom) pairing is central.
Gong 攻
The "attacker" / top in a danmei couple.
Shou 受
The "receiver" / bottom in a danmei couple.
CP CP
Short for "couple" — the pairing fans ship.
Setup tropes
Jianghu 江湖
The wandering martial-arts world outside the court — where wuxia heroes roam.
Wuxia 武侠
Martial-arts chivalry fiction (vs. the more supernatural xianxia).
Transmigration 穿越
Being transported into another world or body — a core setup trope.
Rebirth 重生
Dying and waking up younger with full memories, to redo life (often for revenge).
System 系统
A game-like interface that gives the hero quests, levels and cheats.
Cheat 金手指
A hero's unfair advantage — a system, a ring-soul, future memories.
Werewolf / shifter
Mate 伴侣
A werewolf's destined partner, bound by scent and soul.
Alpha 阿尔法
The dominant wolf in a pack; the typical powerful male lead.
Luna 露娜
The Alpha's female partner / pack's leading woman.
Pack 狼群
A werewolf clan ruled by its Alpha.
Rejected Mate 被拒绝的伴侣
A mate-bond refused by one partner — the angst engine of the genre.
Fated Mate 命中注定的伴侣
The one the universe intends for a wolf; resistance is futile (and the fun).
Mark 标记
A bite/claim that bonds a werewolf to their mate.
