Magic isn't a wish machine — in a universe where it's real, it obeys laws as elegant and brutal as physics. One grunt casters' discovery of those laws changes everything.

A mass-produced, disposable 'caster' learns the true nature of magic — and gains no power from it, because birds fly without knowing aerodynamics. What he gets instead is curiosity, and the drive to make the unreasonable rational. A thinker's military-fantasy.
